Life is full of emotional ups and downs - don't let that be your excuse.

Cheryl lost over 3 stone in a year and has been at her target weight now for over a year.

I'd yoyo dieted for years. Whatever diet was 'in fashion', that's the one I tried. I come from a "large" family, I was a single Mum and both my daughters were overweight too, so I had lots of excuses to eat.

Then I started to suffer from high blood pressure and everything became more serious. I had a busy job and came home from work exhausted every night. I was just working and sleeping – I had no 'me time'. Now my weight was a health risk, I had to do something about it and think about myself for a change.

I joined Slimtone and at the start it was really easy. I came to class every week - never missed. I was really motivated. I just loved listening to the others in the class and finding out how they made meals and what they did. I had a new way of life and I was much healthier.

I was really proud of myself. As a nurse I now felt able to give other people information and was able to share what I learnt at Slimtone.

Then my son was killed in Iraq.

I'd been feeling so good when I was losing weight, but I'm a comfort eater and I knew this could really set me back. So I was back at class after just 2 weeks. This was my support mechanism – I had something to concentrate on and friends to help me along the way.

I may have lost a son, but I inherited a daughter-in-law and a 3-year old grandson when they moved to Wales and came to live with me. Now I had a new life again.

I even started doing exercise – I always hated it and still do! but if I don't keep it up, I know I'll go up a size. It also helps keep me mentally alert. I feel great after a session in the gym.

You know, life is full of emotional ups and downs and it's all too easy to just let it all roll on. My lifestyle has changed completely - I've tried to turn the negatives into positives. I'm fitter now and feel great. And my health has benefited too – I no longer have migraines every month; my cholesterol which was 6.4 is now bang on normal; and my blood pressure is always within healthy limits.

I still go to class every week and I follow the Lifestyle Plan. I also actively fund raise for Help for Heroes and have raised well over £15,000. In June, I even did a tandem sky-dive – I'd never have done that when I was 15 stone!
