Are you one of those people who runs out of the house without grabbing a proper breakfast? A quick cup of coffee and you’re on your way. You may think that cutting down on your food intake early on in the day is going to help with your weight loss, but that isn’t the case. It’s been shown that people who skip breakfast are actually likely to have an overall higher calorie intake throughout the day.
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a good reason. A healthy breakfast helps you lose weight by preventing those mid-morning hunger pangs and you’re less likely to crave unhealthy snacks. Also your body needs fuel, and breakfast gives your metabolism a jump start.
There are lots of suggestions for quick and easy breakfasts in the Lifestyle Plan. Porridge is one of my favourites. It is low in G.I. and provides you with the slow release energy to keep you satisfied until lunchtime. I always get mine ready in the evening, so it’s super-quick in the morning. I measure out 40g (1½ oz) of porridge oats into a microwave jug and cover it with water. In the morning, I pop it in the microwave for a minute and a half, add a splash of milk and then cook for another minute. You can top it with blueberries or raspberries or a small sliced banana – whatever takes your fancy.
Another popular weight-loss breakfast with our members is Overnight Oats. Simply layer 40g (1½ oz) porridge oats with blueberries, raspberries and a low calorie yogurt in a jar. Pop it in the fridge overnight and mix it in the morning to serve. This is great if you need to have your breakfast “on-the-run”!
If you’re looking for something hot and savoury to start the day, creamy mushrooms on toast are really filling. Prepare some button mushrooms and pop into a microwave dish. Spoon over one tablespoon of Philadelphia cheese with chives and cook in the microwave for about 2 minutes or until the mushrooms are soft. Serve on 2 slices of wholemeal toast.
The Lifestyle Plan has lots more healthy, weight-loss breakfast ideas. You can even choose to ‘split’ your breakfast into two meals so that you have a quick and convenient breakfast AND a mid-morning snack. This is ideal if you are an early riser or if you find yourself flagging around the middle of the morning.
So next time you’re tempted to run out of the house on an empty stomach, fuel up your body and jump start your day.
