Marie Griffiths, Garw “local legend,” is the founder of Slimtone. She started her first slimming class in June 1982 in Pontycymer.
Her aim then was to help people lose weight and keep it off while improving their health in fun and accessible classes. It promised no fancy foods or expensive supplements, just straight-forward, nutritionally balanced meals that the family could all enjoy.
Over 44 years on Slimtone is still thriving – and is still an independent business with Marie at the helm.
Marie has always been at the forefront of developments. In 1988, she launched an Internet Mail Order service, very innovative for the time, and in August 2000 introduced an online slimming club and health and fitness portal. Slimtone became a global club with members all over the world.
Marie never stands still and continues researching the latest trends in healthy eating and nutrition. As well as local classes across the Bridgend area, she is very active online through a website and social media – she even managed to keep classes going throughout Covid, both online and when it was safe, face-to-face.
Through her business, Marie is very much part of the local community and Slimtone has supported many good causes over the years raising over £65,000 for charities, including the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline and the local Alzheimer’s Society.
This “unsung Garw hero” still runs the classes herself and provides encouragement and inspiration to everyone she meets, as well as the thousands she has helped over the years.
