This week marks 44 years since local businesswoman Marie Griffiths launched the first Slimtone class to help people get fitter and healthier and look more trim. That’s 44 years of support, encouragement, laughter, challenges overcome and lives changed.
When Marie opened the first Slimtone slimming class in Pontycymer in June 1982, she never imagined how big an impact she would have on so many people.
“I just wanted to help people help themselves to lose weight and more importantly to keep the weight off.” explains Marie. “My aim was to create an atmosphere that was fun but informative. Some of the people who came to class couldn’t afford to buy special foods just for themselves. They found that our plan was family-friendly and ideal for everyone, even those on a budget. By putting together sensible eating plans based on “real” food, I encouraged them and their families to eat more healthily.”
Marie now has classes across the Bridgend area as well as a thriving online business. Amazingly that first class in Pontycymer and the second class opened in the Ogmore Vale Non Political Club in July 1982 have both continued and Slimtone still runs every week in the same venues!
Marie’s original approach to weight loss and fitness has never been compromised. Of course, there have been a few changes along the way – from that first Slimtone Diet Sheet to today’s comprehensive Slimtone Lifestyle Plan. In 1982 a toaster was THE essential gadget in your kitchen, today it’s more likely to be an Air Fryer. But the principles have stayed the same:
- Small changes add up
- Consistency beats perfection
- Support makes success more likely, and
- Setbacks are part of the journey, not the end of it!
With a business spanning over four decades, Marie has worked hard to keep the business fresh and up-to-date. Slimtone was the first ever slimming organisation in the UK to go online. Now with members all over the world, social media has become an integral part of the business. Powerful partnerships with organisation like Sainsbury’s and Champneys have also helped to keep the business growing. But Slimtone remains very much a part of the local community and has contributed over £60,000 to local charities.
Having devoted almost all her working life to helping people achieve their dreams, Marie says she has no plans to retire. “I love what I do. It’s great to give people new and fresh ideas to help them reach their goals. As long as people want my help, I’ll continue to support and motivate them.”
Here are Marie’s Anniversary Tips based on 44 years of wisdom:
- Never wait for Monday – the next meal is always a fresh start
- Progress isn’t always on the scales – energy, confidence, mobility and health matter too
- Plan for success – remember the Slimtone motto ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail!’
- Celebrate small wins – they become big achievements
- Stay connected – support is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success.
Thank you to everyone that has helped to make Slimtone a success!
